Wines made with these barrels were preferred as an alternative to other American Oak coopers for Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon based wines priced to $32. These barrels did not impart any dill or vegetative aromas that are common for American Oak in this region. According to the manufacturer, “Typical characteristics associated with (water bent) barrel are a sweet nose, velvety texture and spicy confluence of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and roasted nut. Our well-toasted fire-bent barrels deliver a rich, balanced texture, aromatic vanilla, pepper and allspice flavors.”
Tasting result showed that water bent barrel was a little lacking in aroma on mid-palate. However, blends of water-bent and fire-bent had the preferred aroma.
