Pinot Noir - Clone 828 Dijon
Description: Description: Clone 828, one of 3 recognized clones from Dijon, is widely planted in Burgundy with 667, 777. The latter were part of California's Phylloxera replant in the 1990s. Clone 828 was not planted untill circa 2005.

Rumor is clone 828 a La Tache clone that originated from University of Dijon. Apparently used in Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Californians continue to seek Pinot Noir clones which produce darkly pigmented grapes. 828 is has not proven to be better than 667 or 777. Early reports could be due to young vines which produce lower yields and darker grapes.

Interview: Recent tour of Sonoma Coast by a major respected vendor's manager promoted 828 for producing dark Pinot Noir wines, due to the more modest yields than a clone such as UCD 2A. Jury is out.
