We are using this barrel with good results at Titus, in the Napa Valley, to make Cabernet Sauvignon based wines. The Allier barrels work quite well. I would add that these barrels are now more toasted, roasted, campfire than the Remond.

This is a high impact barrel, which we use, but carefully. We cannot make wine with 100% new oak using this barrel, simply too overpowering.

We like this barrel, about 75% Allier and 25% Nevers, as the latter are harsher.

I want to say we are continuing to use Nadalie barrels, but have made a change with respect to the forests we prefer, which are Allier. The Nevers versions of the same barrels are quite strong.

We asked Ken Deis about these Bordeaux barrels during harvest 2005. He says, "These are the barrel primary barrel used to make Trilogy. However, they are NOT quite strong enough for the Trilogy, which is becoming a bigger Style 3 wine in the Enologix system. I use these with some Cognac barrels."

I like the Nadalie SHY barrel construction, Allier forest. These barrels are compatible with Remond, and Seguin Moreau (Margaux construction). This is a mix for the Bordeaux varietal wines made for Imagery 2001 through today. And you can taste this combination in the Sunnyslope Merlot and Cabernet bottled with the 2001 and 2002 vintages.

I like the barrels, and I mix up the selection, mostly Allier but some Nevers. I use Medium + on every wine, Cabernet Sauvignon. They give a sweet vanilla attribute.

Sarah, since you arenow winemaker at Quintessa, are you going to use Nadalie or are you using DJ barrels to make Quintessa. If you are not using DJs, why?

I like the Marsannay barrel, I have used it for Cabernet and Merlot at Kirkland Ranch. We did not use it at RH Phillips.

We have not been using these barrels on Chardonnay, heavy handed toasty for Paso Robles Bordeaux varietals. Very very roasted. It has been inconclusive. This is not our high-end Bordeaux barrel (i.e. we do not use it for Hilltop.)

These are among my favorite barrels for Napa Valley wines made from grapes harvested in or near St. Helena. I use the MT, SHT and MTTH. Great barrels.

We used to use these barrels at DiamondCreek years ago. In 1999 and 2000 we have used other barrels too including Seguin Moreau Margaux barrels. Leo McCloskey is recommending Nadalie for some terroir.

Ratings for barrels are good for only a short period of time for some coopers, but Nadalie SHT barrel is somehow manufactured so that wines made with these barrels consistently exhibit a toasty-vanilla attribute that works wel l with some Cabernets. Which? My sense is Cabernet wines from Sonoma appellations would benefit most, as they can be herbal, minty by comparison to Napa. What does any other winemaker(s) know about wood for Sonoma County?

I do like Nadalie barrels, they are very well made and give mountain Cabernet Sauvignon a nice flavor, which I attribute to its low oak tones which in turn are a result of the very tight grain wood used to make these fine barrels.
