As the clock ticks this barrel has not recovered it's reputation with us; that it is not a barrel we use in the Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon wines. To be fair, this is a barrel for the Central Coast, largely because it is a bit sappy and Central Coast Rhone grape group does work. Nonetheless, I can think of better barrels for the Central Coast than this one. | |

These barrels, once not used to make Howell Mountain wines, are being tested again with good results, but only using the ICON barrel. | |

These barrels produce cedar to planky aromatic attributes in Bordeaux varietal wines. OK-feedback from the Napa Valley's producers of 90+ point wines is that it works better with intense Meritage wines better than delicate 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines. | |

I like the Seguin Moreau Margaux barrel construction, Allier forest. These barrels are compatible with Remond, and Nabalie (SHT construction). This is a mix for the Bordeaux varietal wines made for Imagery 2001 through today. And you can taste this combination in the Sunnyslope Merlot and Cabernet bottled with the 2001 and 2002 vintages. | |

I began working with these in May of 2001 after Leo McCloskey suggestion. I used these this coopers Margaux barrels on the 2003 Cherry Block and 2003 Alexander Valley Cabernets. These barrels give our wines the same characters that you find in Napa Valley wines. Enologix is spreading the use of these barrels in our high end wines. | |

Alain Fouquet, former Director of Sequin Moreau USA has left the cooperage and creates his own barrels for Alain Fouquet Barrels. Sebastiani winemaker Mark Lyon says, Alain Fouquest Barels, his "Signiture Barrels", are considered really good for Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons. My sense is they are as good as Seguin Moreau. Alain sources builds his barrels at one of the Francois Freres cooperages in Bordeaux. By the way Alain sources his wood from his own sources." | |

This is a barrel for white wines; not for most Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a poor choice for wine harvested on the Western and Eastern Hillsides of Napa Valley, and probably the Carneros; while this barrel may be useful if you are harvesting grapes from Rutherford where the Cabernet herbal tones are greatly diminished. I think the wines are NOT sweetened in aroma or taste by the barrel. | |

The medium plus toast export barrel works with Carneros Merlot, and these spicy barrels adds complexity to wines with our terroir. | |

I have used these barrels to make 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, Style I-IV, and they are very good in my opinion, because they add a flavor that does not mask fruit. | |

Re Carneros Pinot Noir Reserve wine aging I prefer Taransaud mixed with Remond and Fr. Freres. Seguin-Moreaus is a popular barrel that adds a planky characteristic to Carneros Pinot Noirs after 12 months. That with our ripe, even rustic tannins, detracts from wines. We use several different kinds of these barrels, our favorite for luxury Cabernet Sauvignons is their Margaux barrel. It integrates, accents the bouquet of our Cabernet based Hilltop. It is perfumy and not so much 'lactone.' The Haut Brion barrel adds an aggressive character to our wines. | |

This is a ‘boardy’ barrel. These barrels should not be rated above 90-points because in my opinion some of my clients making 100% Cabernet Sauvignons gain harsh attributes from all but the Margaux barrels. I do like the Margaux barrels very much for Napa Bordeaux blends which are less than 90% Cabernet Sauvignon. | |
